What is RSS?

Note: If you STILL do not know what RSS after reading this page. Please email us at dudes[at]tadbit[.]com. We will personally help you understand it.

What does RSS stand for?
RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication (RSS 2.0) or you might have also heard it to be Rich Site Summary (RSS 0.91). Most sites now offer RSS 2.0.

What is RSS?
RSS is a format for delivering (summary) regularly updating web content. It is a technology (nothing technical really) that is being used by millions and millions of web users around the globe to keep track of their favorite websites.
- Simple Example -
You are surfing on the Internet and you come also a site that seems to be getting regularly updated. So, then what do you do? Well, you look for the an image or a link that shows “RSS.” This link right here will let you use your favorite RSS Reader (we will go into that in a bit) and keep your RSS Reader updated so you are able to read it at anytime. Once you have read the RSS content in your RSS Reader, it will automatically be marked as read and you will not see it again.

What FREE RSS Readers are available out there?

  1. Google Reader - Web based RSS feed catcher. Go!
  2. Bloglines - Web based as well. My personal favorite. Go!
  3. NewsGator - Now, free! NewsGator offers a wide variety of RSS tools. FeedDemon for Windows, NetNewsWire for Mac, NewsGator Go! for mobile, NewsGator Inbox for Microsoft Outlook, and they also have a NewsGator Online for an online RSS Reader. Go!

What should I look for to find RSS feeds in any website?
The RSS icon has spread the world wide web very fast. You will not miss it. It is meant to be OUT there… in your eyes. They come in all kinds of shapes and sizes so look for one of these below.

Why is this useful?
RSS content and using RSS is very useful to every person. Most people don’t realize that because they simply do not know what RSS is and how to actually make use of it. You have so many great websites you come across on a daily basis, how do you keep all those regularly updating content? You visit the 50+ sites daily and “search” for updates? NO! Do not do that! Use RSS, grab an RSS Reader, find the RSS URL, and keep updated the easy way.

Yeah, stop bookmarking regularly updating sites. You will miss way to much information. You will either forget to go to the bookmarked site, because look at your bookmark list… so unorganized and so bunched and just have so many sites to keep up with.

Got Firefox? You’ve got RSS!
I won’t go into what Firefox is. If you don’t know, you shouldn’t have found this blog.
To those who have and use Firefox… look for the RSS icon in your ‘Address Bar’ or ‘URL Bar.’

Don’t want RSS updates? Want another option?
If you are not liking RSS very much most websites offer Email Updates… a similar RSS type system… only it goes to your mailbox at a specified time.

So… overall what is RSS, again?
A really simple system to keep you updated daily, without shuffling those nasty bookmarks.

We hope you enjoyed this and possibly got something out of it. Please subscribe to our RSS or get updates via Email.
